A |     Manila, Oct 19 (UNI) The Philippine authorities have presented to journalists the alleged killer of radio broadcaster Percy Lapid, shot dead in early October, media reports said on Wednesday.
According to the Philippine news portal Philstar, 39-year-old suspect Joel Escorial from the Philippine Quezon City voluntarily surrendered to police on Tuesday.
Escorial told reporters that he had surrendered to the police out of guilt after the authorities published his photos taken by surveillance cameras.
"Someone who knew a police officer helped me. That is where I was brought to. I was made to surrender there," the suspect said as quoted by the news portal.
Escorial also named three other people who are also supposedly behind Lapid's murder, namely siblings Edmon Dimaculangan and Israel Dimaculangan, as well as Alias Orly (Orlando). The suspect said that the order for the murder came from the New Bilibid prison in the Philippine city of Muntinlupa.
"Whoever comes adjacent to Percy, he will be the one to shoot. It just so happens I came close to him. He told us that if I do not shoot, I will be killed. That is why I shot Percy," Escorial added.
The police and journalist Roy Mabasa, brother of the slain radio broadcaster, filed a murder complaint against Escorial and his three accomplice with the justice ministry, the report said.
According to Escorial, he received 140,000 pesos ($2,373) to his bank account out of promised 500,000 Philippine pesos for a group of six people, according to the report.
The suspect also asked for forgiveness from the family of the murdered journalist.
On October 3, Philippine radio broadcaster Percival Mabasa, better known under pseudonym Percy Lapid, who had long been criticizing the country's authorities, was shot and killed outside his house in the city of Las Pinas. The National Union of Philippine Journalists condemned the murder, blaming the government for failure to protect the population.
Lapid became the second journalist killed in the Philippines since the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. came to power in May. On September 18, another radio journalist, Renato "Rey" Blanco, was stabbed to death in the town of Mabinay.
UNI/SPUTNIK GNK。    The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are widely regarded as the most prestigious and coveted honours in global cinema. For over nine decades, the Oscars have stood as a benchmark of cinematic excellence. However, in a surprising move, the Academy has now decided to leave the ABC network, where it has televised the show till 1960. From 2029, the Oscars will likely be streamed on YouTube               To understand a little bit of Oscars' history, the event did not get televised till 1953. It was originally with the NBC network but it went over to ABC in 1960. The relationship lasted for 10 years before the rights went back to NBC. After another 5-year stint, the Oscars returned to ABC and have remained with the network ever since. ABC also made history by broadcasting the Academy Awards in colour for the first time in 1966. However, this long-standing partnership is now nearing its end, as the iconic awards ceremony prepares to move with the times and embrace a new era of broadcasting.     As per the recent reports, the move to shift Oscars to YouTube will give fans a deeper and more personal look into the award ceremony. The Academy is also planning to release other related content, including red carpet pre-show event, BTS coverage and the Governors award footages. All of it will be available for streaming, making content more accessible to fans. The most important update is that the awards show might be available for free to stream, unless the Academy decides to keep it in a subscription-based system on YouTube.          In other news, Homebound has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards 2026 in the Best International Feature Film category, placing it among 15 selected from submissions by 86 countries. Some of the other films in the category include Palestine 36 from Palestine, The Voice of Hind Rajab from Tunisia, No Other Choice from South Korea and The Secret Agent from Brazil.     Also Read: Kiara Advani, Shahid Kapoor and Others React As Homebound Gets Shortlisted for Oscars 2026。
